Introduction to the Short Story will provide an introduction to the study of short fiction, and thus to further literary study in the department. It will introduce both the formal qualities of narrative and useful ways to talk about literary works.

This course will explore selected topics in cultural theory (such as identity, ethnicity, race, gender, class, and the media) with reference to contemporary American society. These topics will be discussed through contextual and semiotic analysis. For this purpose, the course aims to apply the insights gained in AMER 214 Issues in Cultural Studies course to a more advanced analysis of Cultural Studies in America, and introduce students to the major theories which have shaped the different areas of research in American Cultural Studies.
